About our qualifications

We have three teacher training qualifications which are all delivered online and supported by a personal tutor who will guide you through the duration of your course.

The courses consist of a range of units followed by observations – this will vary depending on the course. See the table below for a comparison of the different courses.

  • 3 Units*.
  • Introduces creating a safe environment, lesson planning and assessment
  • A One-hour observation.
  • Suitable for new adult/further education teachers, coaches, facilitators or trainers.
  • Average course duration 3-6 months.
  • 6 Units*.
  • Practices how to meet the needs of learners and developing resources.
  • Three hours of observation.
  • Suitable for those who are teaching on a regular basis within an organisation on a paid or voluntary basis.
  • Average course duration 6-12 months.
  • 8 Units* with 8 hour observations.
  • Explores learning theories and how they relate to practice.
  • View education in a wider context of policy and quality assurance.
  • Suitable for those in a teaching and/or curriculum leader role or want to apply for QTLS (Quality Teaching Learning and Skills)
  • Average course duration 10-18 months

This qualification is the initial qualification for those entering further education teaching or training and work a few hours a week or less.

  • You need to be working with individuals 14+ years

It is also preferable to have a Level 2 (GCSE A-C) qualification in numeracy and literacy however it is not essential to complete the numeracy, literacy and ICT qualifications before starting the AET course.

Units
1. Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training.

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to understand the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training and the relationship between different professionals in education and training.

2. Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

This unit looks at teaching and learning strategies that facilitate the learning process

3. Understanding assessment in education and training

This unit will review a range of assessment types and their impact on learners.

This qualification develops practical teaching skills and, through the units, prepares teachers to work in a wide range of contexts. This qualification is suitable for teachers/trainers working several hours a week on a regular basis.

Entry requirements
  • A minimum of 30 hours teaching time for your duration of the course
  • Working with individuals 14+ years
  • Hold or work towards a level 2 (GCSE A-C) qualification in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT.
Unit outline
1. Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to understand the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training and the relationship between different professionals in education and training.

2. Planning to meet the needs of learners 

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to agree individual learning goals and inclusive practice

3. Delivering education and training

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to use inclusive teaching and learning approaches, in accordance with internal processes and external requirements

4. Assessing learners in education and training

The purpose of this unit is to explore different types and methods of assessment

5. Using resources in education and training

The purpose of this unit is to enable the learner to use resources in the delivery of inclusive teaching and learning and to be able to evaluate that use.

6. Teaching in a specialist area

This unit aims to develop learners’ knowledge and skills in relation to teaching in your area of specialism.

This qualification provides training for those individuals who aspire to, or hold, a teaching role with an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities. You will also need this qualification to apply for QTLS administered by the Society of Education and Training.

  • A minimum of 100 hours teaching time for your duration of the course
  • Working with individuals 14+ years
  • Hold or work towards a level 2 (GCSE A-C) qualification in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT. If your teaching subject is Numeracy, literacy or ICT you should hold a level 3 qualification or above.
Unit outline
1. Teaching learning and assessment in education and training

The purpose of the unit is to provide the learner with knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training.

2. Understanding and managing behaviours in a learning environment

This unit aims to enable learners to manage behaviours in a learning environment.

3. Specialist delivery techniques and activities

This unit aims to enable the learner to explore the use of specialist delivery techniques in their own specialist vocational or subject area.

4. Understanding the principles and practices of internally assuring the quality of assessment

This unit give a guide on the process of internal quality assurance

5. Theories, principles and models in education and training

The purpose of this unit is to provide the learner with knowledge and understanding of theories, principles and models applied to education and training.

6. Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area

This unit aims to enable learners to develop, use, and organise resources within a specialist subject, vocational or other area

7. Teaching in a specialist area

This unit aims to develop learners’ knowledge and skills in relation to teaching in a specialist area

8. Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training

The purpose of the unit is to provide the learner with knowledge, understanding and skills relating to developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
