The teaching and learning cycle

You have looked at your role as a teacher and started to think about your learners and why they attend your sessions. To work with learners effectively, there is a framework that provides structure to the interactions and support you provide. This framework is called the teaching and learning cycle.

As we go through the rest of the course, we will look at each aspect of the teaching and learning cycle. Here is an introduction of the 5 elements.

Teaching and learning cycle.
1. Identify need
2. Plan
3. Teach
4. Assess
5. Evaluate

Identify need

The type of need could be to support learning, e.g. dyslexia or an environmental need, e.g. childcare or travel.

Plan

Planning would include; your sessions, resources and materials needed for your session.

Teach

The transfer of the knowledge and skills you have planned to the learner.

Assess

A way to see if learning has taken place and identifying any areas for improvement.

Evaluate

Reviewing the session, your teaching, planning and assessment practices.

Using the teaching and learning cycle does not need to be a linear process. For example, there may be a learner need that is only identified once you start, or midway through teaching your course. Additionally, having assessed a topic e.g. with a quiz, you may decide to add some more teaching to help your learners.

We will now look at the teaching and learning cycle in more detail.
