What is a teacher?

What do we mean by a teacher?

For this course a teacher is anyone whose main role is to impart knowledge to others. This includes; facilitators, coaches and tutors. However there are a range of other roles that you take on as a teacher.

As a teacher, you may find that you take on many roles

Trainer and class

The process of instruction to provide build on or promote new knowledge

Two ladies in consultation

a person who marks work according to the relevant assessment criteria

Adminstrator

A person whose job involves helping to organise and supervise the way that an organisation or institution functions

Teacher Helping Students Training To Be Car Mechanics

someone who gives help and advice to encourage independence

Guiding people to improve their skills and knowledge

The above is by no means an exhaustive list, but understanding the different roles can enhance your teaching to be more inclusive, and the relationship with your learners – particularly if people have had a previous negative learning experience. Being able to understand and help the transition into their learning will in the end, be of benefit to you, the learner and your organisation.

For your first assessment, you will think a bit more about what each role involves. For now you may want to add a few notes about the duties you do as a teacher. [notes link]

Dealing with role difficulties

Sometimes trying to juggle the different roles as well as our work-life balance can be challenging for some. If you find that you are struggling to cope with your workload, it is work discussing this with your line manager or colleagues for advice and/or support. If there isn’t anyone in the organisation who you trust to talk to you can contact Education Support Partnership –www.educationsupportpartnership.org.uk
