Legislation and regulations

Compliant teaching

As teaching staff, we are bound by different requirements to ensure that we are supporting our learners by adhering to legal frameworks. These frameworks are in place to ensure our professionalism and safety of our learners and ourselves.

Legislation

The processes and procedures that we follow would usually have originated from an act of law. An example of this would be health and safety procedures from the Health and Safety act 1974. Equality and diversity procedures would have originated from the Equalities Act 2010.

Regulations

Not all requirements are from a legal base. Some organisations have their own policies and codes of practice that they wish staff to adhere to as part of their ethos. For example, some organisations do not allow jeans or casual clothing and prefer their staff to have a professional image whereas some organisations, such as those working with NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) groups advise that dressing too formally may increase the barrier between teaching staff and the learners.

Summary

It is important to be aware of and follow the correct legal and regulatory requirements and codes of practice in our roles as not following these can have implications on your teaching role.
