For clarity, on this course a teacher is anyone whose main role is to impart knowledge to others. This includes; facilitators, coaches and tutors, trainers and lecturers.

Whichever term you use, teaching isn’t just about teaching! You will find you take on many roles to support the learning process.

Teacher
One whose occupation is to instruct
Assessor
A person who marks work according to the relevant assessment criteria
Coach
Guiding people to improve their skills and knowledge
Mentor
Someone who gives help and advice to encourage independence
Administrator
A person whose job involves helping to organise and supervise the way that an organisation or institution functions
The above is by no means an exhaustive list, but understanding the different roles can enhance your teaching to be more inclusive. It can also benefit the relationship with your learners – particularly if people have had a previous negative learning experience. Being able to understand and help the transition to their learning will in the end, be of benefit to you, the learner and your organisation. Open you notes to reflect on the different roles.
